rigs Kayak sailing - "Sail when you can - paddle when you must" Two different types sail rigs are available for the NERIS folding kayaks - an upwind 'Profi' sail rig and a downwind fleximast 'Genaker' sail rig "With the Genaker sail rig, you are setting the kayak up to paddle (sail whenever the wind is favorable by raising the mast), with the Profi sail rig, you are setting up the kayak to sail (mast is 'permanently' up, lower the sails when there's no wind)" NERIS 3.0 Genaker Sail Rig - 3sqm downwind flexi-mast. Uses a crossover Genoa / Spinnaker sail with an 'A' frame mast that is hinged at the bases and attached to both sides of the kayak's cockpit. The A frame mast is normally stowed flat on the front deck, ready to go, but is designed so that the mast can be easily and quickly raised into the upright position when the wind is favorable whilst out paddling. Easily attain speeds exceeding 8-10km/h (5 knots) comfortably. Reach can be near as 70 degrees (Broad Reach). On the tandems and triple seaters, the rear paddler can continue to paddle should the wind speed be low. The shape of the A frame mast is designed to fit flat on the front deck when in the lowered position, so the mast does not get in the way of the front paddler at any time. A Whisker boom to extend the reach can be included. With the sail rig properly set up, it only takes around 15 seconds to go from paddling mode to sailing mode, and about the same time to revert back to paddling mode. Control lines feed back to a centralised cleat bar positioned on the starboard side of the cockpit. As it is a downwind sail rig, there is no need to have outriggers, deep keels or lee-boards as seen with upwind sail rigs which are the type of rigs that require you to ziz-zag. In keeping with the folding kayak concept, the A frame mast comes in pieces and packs into a slim carry bag - 100 x 10 x 10cm. For NERIS Smart-2 & 3, Neris Smart PRO & PRO S, NERIS Alu-1, 2, 3 and NERIS Valkure-2 & 3 kayaks only. There are two variant Genaker 3.0 sail rigs due to different base mounts needed for the ALU / Valkure and the SMART / Smart PRO series kayaks. .
