Important Notice
It is your responsibility to ensure that you have a valid license / permission from the relevant authorities to use water craft on UK's waterways, rivers, lakes, etc. Not all inland water is open to paddlers, some access points / rivers are privately owned or is bounded by land which is private, so do check beforehand. Membership of a canoe union / club is very beneficial.

Useful websites

Websites with useful information to enrich your paddling experiences and knowledge.

Boating on the Thames (Making the most of the Thames)
Port of London Authority

The Tideway section of the lower River Thames is a particularly challenging and potentially hazardous section of the river with fast-moving tidal water and high volumes of river traffic. There are also official "rules of the road" and signals on bridges which paddlers should understand and obey.

The Port of London Authority has a very useful website loaded with information and advice for recreational river users. All paddlers using the Tideway should familiarise themselves with this material for their own safety. There is a section devoted to canoeists and there is also a strongly recommended useful instructional video entitled Rowing Through Central London.

British Canoe Union

The BCU is the national governing body of canoeing and kayaking in the UK. It is concerned with all paddle sports in the UK, recreational as well as competitive, in open and closed craft, paddled with single and double-bladed paddles, on inland and coastal waters as well as open ocean. An important aspect is that you be licensed, be suitably coached and know where you can paddle, etc.

Canal and River Trust

A charity entrusted with the care of 2000 miles of waterways in England and Wales. The website has useful information and this trust is looking for volunteers to become involved with the wide ranging rewarding opportunities in the work that they do. A very useful resource about UK's rivers. For the paddler, there is information about temporary paddling licensees at reduced rates for short periods, to river levels and condition, location of campsites at locks, and many more. Paddle Points

Paddle Points provides a central online information center where canoeists and kayakers can go to find where they can launch. The idea is simple. You search for the place in the search box on the page, and the paddle points in that area will show on a map. Clicking the various markers representing launch spots, weirs, rapids, slalom, car parking, clubs, campsites will provide more handy information. There are now over 4000 information markers covering the UK useful to paddlers on this site.

Song of the Paddle is the UK online home for those with a love of, or an interest in, open canoes and canoeing. Combined with an active forum, this site is a very useful resource as to locations as to where you can do flat water touring, camping ideas, etc. Highly recommended site for relevant info and being a forum, anyone can post questions and expect to get instant answers from knowledgeable folks. The Rivers Access Campaign

The purpose of the Rivers Access Campaign is not only to raise awareness of the access issue on inland waterways in England (and Wales) but to bring about a change. The campaign is being undertaken by Canoe England on behalf all members of the public.

In England and Wales, unlike elsewhere in the world, the public do not have an automatic right to have access to rivers. Scotland already enjoys that right. Access to the UK’s waterways is highly restricted (EG - Owners of river banks have legal right to stop people paddling), and maintenance of the waterways is dramatically under-funded. With over 90% of the population living within two miles of a waterway, many more people would take up water sports if accessibility and facilities were improved.

"... there should be a public right of access along our inland waters.. so we can all enjoy our natural heritage...rights with responsibilities..."
